Family Photos at Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon Family photos is some of my most favorite work. I had a last minute call to take family photos at Grand Canyon. I’d planned just to drive to Flagstaff earlier that evening. I had to shoot a wedding at the Flagstaff Arboretum the next day but when I got this call, I couldn’t pass up taking some beautiful family photos.
The brothers are 3 and 5 years old and I wasn’t sure if we should schedule the photoshoot for a full hour or less. Even so, knowing the attention span of small children – we ended up scheduling for an hour anyway. I tried to make it fun for the kids without asking too much of them. The more i’m able to keep it casual, the better it is for me.
In terms of preparing for your photo session, I still recommend pants over skirts. Having mom in a dress made her harder to pose, yet there are only so many family poses you can make from a standing position. The more that you are able to bend, sit, stand, kneel etc. the more flexibility I have in posing and the easier it will be to create a variety of images. I understand pants in not always the preferred clothing choice. If you are able to lay around in a dress, that works too! I am often afraid to ask folks to lay around in their nice clothing, especially wedding dresses but sometimes those kind of pictures end up being my favorite of all.
I had a lot of fun with this little family and I was surprised at the stamina of the children, they were attentive and enjoyed scrambling along the rocks and being outside together. They were super sweet and followed directions so well for such young people. It’s really nice to be able to meet people from around the globe and to share these Grand Canyon sunsets with them.
