Over the years, I’ve been asked many times about family photo sessions at the Grand Canyon. For a while, it was difficult for me to take on every request, but now—with trusted photographers working alongside me—we’re able to offer Grand Canyon family portrait photography throughout the year! Here are the many ways to make your own session amazing!

My Family Portrait Photography Philosophy
Sure, souvenirs like ornaments, snow globes, and t-shirts are fun. But, unlike those items, photographs don’t fade or get packed away in a box. A family portrait at the Grand Canyon becomes a timeless keepsake—a memory you can return to for decades. There is really nothing better than taking home a personal souvenir like this.

As I get older, I realize how priceless photos truly are. People we love sometimes leave us suddenly, and no amount of stuff fills that void. The objects I’ve collected over the years often feel like clutter, but photographs of the people I love are what I treasure the most. At the end of the day, what I want are those captured moments with the people dearest to me.

That’s why I believe in the value of family portrait photography at the Grand Canyon. It’s more than just a picture. It’s a story, a legacy, and a reminder of the people who stood by your side as you looked out over the great expanse of the Grand Canyon.

How This Family Portrait Photographer Got Her Start
I have a ridiculous amount of experience taking family photos. In fact, that’s how my family portrait photographer career started. It was in a studio shooting family photos on film in medium format. Before portraits, I was a black and white fine art photography snob!

I’m not going to lie, I got a little burned out on it and was then increasingly inspired by photographing couples on elopement adventures. After opening myself back up to it, I found that I am really great at making kids laugh! I know the tricks for each age group pulling from experiences working even at the Grand Canyon Preschool.

I believe that no matter the season, family portrait photography at the Grand Canyon is always worth it. Whether it’s the vibrant light of summer, the peaceful quiet of winter, or the golden glow of fall, what matters most is capturing your family together at one of the most extraordinary places on Earth.

Why Family Portrait Photography at the Grand Canyon is Always Worth It
The Grand Canyon is a place that unites people. I’ve had the joy of photographing local families, multi-generational family reunions, and even families returning to the park after decades. Often, parents who first visited as kids will bring their own children back to experience it.

Some of the stories I hear are deeply moving. Families who dreamed of a Grand Canyon family trip for years but were delayed by life circumstances, or children standing in awe at a place their parents spoke about their whole lives.

I know that for some families, the pricing for professional photography may feel like a lot. But, it reflects both the going rate for quality photography and the unique logistics of working at the Grand Canyon.

All of my photographers live over an hour away from the park, which means that every session requires several hours of travel on top of the actual time spent photographing. Because of that, we only schedule one-hour sessions even if you think you might need less time, one hour is the minimum that we book.

I often get questions about mini sessions which are quick photo shoots where you just grab a handful of images. Mini sessions are usually structured events where photographers set up in one location for a day, photographing multiple families in back-to-back time slots of 10–15 minutes each.

Because the photographer can work with several clients in a row, they’re able to offer those shorter sessions at a lower rate. At the Grand Canyon, that type of setup just isn’t realistic. With travel, permits, weather, and the unpredictable nature of the park, it would be nearly impossible to offer fairly-priced mini sessions in this environment.

Instead, our one-hour family portrait photography sessions are designed to give your family the time and space to feel comfortable, explore a location, and come away with images that feel natural and meaningful rather than rushed.

Celebrate Milestones with Meaningful Moments
Many of our sessions are booked around big milestones like 50th wedding anniversaries, family reunions, or birthdays. These are perfect opportunities to go beyond posed in-studio portraits and create space for authentic moments. Here are some ways to make your session more memorable:

- Bring something to celebrate with: champagne, sparkling cider, cupcakes, or a charcuterie board to share. The laughter and interaction around food can lead to wonderful candids!
- Plan a special gift exchange. Whether it’s jewelry, a framed photo, or another meaningful keepsake, the act of opening a gift together creates genuine surprise and joy adding to the candid moments.
- Enjoy downtime together. Sometimes the best photos happen when you’re simply relaxing, talking, or taking in the view as a family.

When I work with kids, I like to encourage them to pause in gratitude. They give thanks to their family who made the trip possible, and for the chance to stand at one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Visiting the Grand Canyon usually takes months, sometimes years of saving and planning. To finally be here together surrounded by its vast beauty is an experience worth remembering and preserving.
