With couples like these two, I never have to worry. They know right from the start how to make an experience entirely their own even when it’s a surprise! All I had to do was come along for the ride with my camera in tow! See how the entire day unfolded for the start of this couple’s story at their sunrise surprise proposal.

Planning a Sunrise Surprise Proposal
As a team, Sarah likes to plan, and Troy loves to do what she plans. When it came to their surprise proposal at Lake Powell–it was Troy’s turn to make the plans! I was happy to provide my Arizona expertise to help him pick just the right spot! While most of the romantic engagement proposal ideas I capture happen at the Grand Canyon–I’m always happy to share my favorite surrounding areas.

Located in Page, Arizona, Lake Powell has amazing places for capturing anything from couples portraits and engagement sessions to elopements. It is a unique destination located in both Northern Arizona and Utah in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. You can easily enjoy the lake by filling your day with activities whether that is a guided kayak tour or camping. There are amazing views you can experience by camping overlooking the lake!
Despite our well-tuned plan, I was a little concerned about the weather on the day of the proposal. Troy and I stayed in constant communication leading up to the day confirming that we were sticking to the original plan. Luckily, the forecasted precipitation never occurred! That meant that we could carry on with the sunrise surprise proposal we imagined.

A Sunrise Surprise Proposal Done Their Own Way

Walking into this sunrise surprise was Sarah–described by Troy as a highly motivated and driven person. She hits goals like running a marathon in almost every state while still finding time to relax through her other favorite activities such as reading. Troy shared that prior to meeting they had both practically given up on finding someone. He instead spent his free time pursuing his own hobbies of improv, chess and playing video games.

The two met serendipitously on New Year’s at a bar in Nashville, Tennessee. Both were surprised to find a long-term relationship during such random circumstances. Since then, together they have created an environment of love where they can talk about anything and support each other in all things. As Sarah once put it, “we mesh so well that I feel like we are the same person.”
It was this foundation that led them to experiencing a new place together for a surprise they would never forget! As their surprise proposal photographer I hid out of sight to capture the event that went off without a hitch! Already knowing their story and how perfectly they fit together made capturing this perfection even easier.

After Sarah said an excited “Yes!” to Troy’s question, we explored the many viewpoints that Lake Powell has to offer. I usually do a fair bit of prompting during these couples sessions offering a mix of natural posing. This time I tried some new things that created movement adding a variety of looks for their session. Once we started experimenting, the ideas just kept flowing!

Lake Powell–The Place for The Surprise

There are many other great places in Northern Arizona for sunrise surprise proposal photos that are just a few hours drive from each other. Lake Powell just happens to be one of my favorites! I’m here to act not only as your Arizona photographer, but also as your guide providing tips and tricks to make your experience most enjoyable.
For example, at a sunrise session that involves walking on slickrock, I recommend comfortable shoes that perform better on uneven ground. The more territory we can cover quickly, the more variety of landscapes we can include in your photos. It’s not always easy to get that at sunset, but sunrise is always a little easier to photograph those different backgrounds!
Together, these two prioritize their love for each other, their dog Marley, and their cat Charles. They shared how this involves a date night at least once a week and spending the weekends together relaxing with their pets.

For couples like Sarah and Troy who love one another so purely, an environment like the Arizona outdoors set the stage for a beautiful experience that’s easily captured and forever cherished!
