STIJN & NIKKI at Lake Powell
Stijn reached out to me about proposing to Nikki during a family trip through the Southwest with their son, Nolan. He wanted sunrise photos overlooking Lake Powell in Page, Arizona along with some sweet family portraits that included all three of them. Stijn also desired having a quiet moment where he could ask Nikki to marry him without their four-year-old tagging along.
That’s when I called in my wedding-day Mary Poppins, Sarah Kay, who regularly serves my couples as a photo assistant, florist, and wedding officiant. She also happens to have a magical touch with kids thanks to her background as a nanny and outdoor educator. Sarah Kay was immediately down for the sunrise mission!
The two of us landed at the Grand Canyon the day before, caught a few hours of sleep, made coffee before dawn, and then drove out well ahead of schedule. When we arrived, we found a locked gate blocking access to the spot I had previously scouted.
Thankfully, we were able to put our flexible outdoor marriage proposal ideas to work! Also, because the proposal was disguised as a family portrait session, we could pivot without giving anything away. I had a secondary location in mind with a similar overlook that I had never photographed before. It was just seven minutes away from the original location and it turned out to be absolutely perfect.

The lake was too low to reach the shoreline before sunrise, so we set up on a sandstone ledge above the water. We started by taking family photos, then transitioned into capturing couples portraits as the first light touched the cliffs. Eventually, Nolan went off to play with Sarah Kay, with their giggles carrying throughout the canyon! This gave Stijn the space he needed to pop the question.
Nikki’s surprise and joy were so genuine. These are the kinds of moments that make waking up at 4:30 a.m. and rerouting under pressure completely worth it. It was a beautiful start to the day and a memory I’ll never forget!
MAGDALENE & JACOB at The Grand Canyon
This Grand Canyon proposal was a total surprise. Magdalene reached out with a last-minute request for family portrait photography, and it happened to match when I was already scheduled to be at the Grand Canyon. It was perfect timing!
I didn’t have much time to get to know the family before the session as I was meeting them for the first time at their Grand Canyon viewpoint. Jacob and the kids stepped out of the car first, and as I was casually chatting with the children, he discreetly let me know that this was also going to be a surprise proposal!
I was completely floored. Quickly and quietly, I asked if the kids already knew and whether he wanted them included in the moment. We pulled together our outdoor marriage proposal ideas coming up with a simple plan and a cue. After a few preliminary photos, I noticed the sun was about to disappear behind a cloud and I knew that we needed to move forward. We did, and it was incredible. What happened next was one of the sweetest things I’ve ever witnessed.
One child was his and one was hers. They were both still pretty young, and as they processed what had just happened following the proposal, they started bouncing around excitedly and calling each other brother and sister. It was one of those moments that reminds me that photography isn’t really about pictures. It’s about preserving the beginnings of stories.

We lost the sun earlier than I would have liked, and with such a short session it was hard to fit both family photos and a proposal into the time. But that’s OK. There will be a lifetime of opportunities for family portraits. But, you only get one moment when two families become one. Let’s make sure we capture them well!

To provide the best experience possible, any proposal session that includes children, extended family, or additional guests requires my 1.5 hours proposal session package. This gives us the extra time necessary so everyone has room to breathe instead of feeling rushed. The package includes a family photography session, beautiful couples portraits, high-res downloads of all edited images, and a guaranteed 30-day photo gallery turnaround.
I often encounter families looking for Grand Canyon photography who are traveling and don’t have an additional family member available for assistance. That’s why including my assistant matters so much for your session. It is possible to pull off a marriage proposal with family because the goal is never to restrain the children.
The point is to let them play naturally, build trust with us, and create genuine moments while keeping everyone’s attention focused in the right direction. Having that extra time built into your package provides the flexibility necessary for working with kids as well as any unexpected weather.
One challenge we encounter at the Grand Canyon is that many of my favorite locations don’t have nearby restrooms. For larger groups, families with toddlers, or anyone needing extra privacy, we can bring a pop-up changing tent and even a portable flush toilet.
It’s an optional add-on, but for longer sessions it can make everyone much more comfortable, especially families with young children, guests with mobility concerns, or anyone getting dressed on location.
It also gives us a private space for wardrobe changes, makeup touch-ups, helping little ones get changed before photos begin, or simply giving everyone a little more comfort while spending extra time together.
